Haiku
In Keeping with the Seasons

9/15/05

two fine silhouettes
soaring before a backdrop
of cumulus clouds

the arrival of
shipments of chrysanthemums
surely signals fall

lone orange-leaved tree
sticks out like a sore thumb in
an expanse of green

8/18/05

a little cricket
somewhere among the flowers
noisy, but unseen

shadows cast by ferns
from their hanging pots above
are dark explosions

7/14/05

little finch darts in
and out of the chain link fence
as it would a shrub

6/26/05

8 o'clock and the
sky is already hazy -
a dog day ahead

elegantly draped
electrical cables seem
like spiderweb strands

5/18/05

a big blue button
slightly deeper shade of sky -
the water tower

similar contours
these pale clouds and this bright green
canopy of leaves

4/17/05

bradford pears in bloom:
a festive decoration
in this asphalt maze

metal crocuses
emerge as if rooted in
a nearby building

4/13/05

the forest absorbs
the black of night faster than
the still-glowing sky

3/6/05

greeted by birdsong
ground still covered with snowfall:
spring's mixed messages

1/23/05 Haiku Diptych

light dark light dark light:
trees and their shadows on snow
branches sway below

casting long shadows
undisturbed landscape of snow
unseen moon above

1/16/05 Light & Reflection Haiku

bowed streaks of light are
vibrating slightly with the
motion of the doors

seeming suspended
a bright light in the forest
supports camouflaged

1/9/05

grey overcast morn
only a few shades brighter:
a parking lot light

12/5/04 Holiday Haiku

leaning evergreens:
abundant in needles yet
lacking any roots

such a ghost forest -
Christmas trees placed on concrete
fleeting scent of pine

12/1/04

thin plume of white smoke
curling briskly in the wind
whisps disappearing

red amaryllis
from an unassuming stalk
sprout like miracles

first of december:
the weather seems far too mild
to herald this month

how suddenly the
sky changes its mood from the
stormy to the clear

11/22/04

why do the brown leaves
cling so stubbornly to the
branches of the oak?

late fall and winter
drifting into each other -
yellow leaves remain

11/12/04

slightly-opened shade
a sliver of cold blue-gray
reveals a wet day

11/16/04

a shimmering thread
wavers across my windshield
I cannot grasp it

10/3/04

the morning sun casts
long shadows on the cold earth
october is here

edges are tarnished
with tinges of red and gold
the leaves are turning

9/30/04

smeared across the board
scribbled, faint marks in white chalk
barely visible

drab, beige curtains block
any view of the outside
it is sterile here

9/1/04

rows of bulbous mums
casting shadows in the sun
fringe-edged, blue-gray forms

cool breeze stirs the leaves
scattered on the cement floor
humble scraps dancing

a line of black pots
each with proper tag attached
describing the plant

9/12/04

plastic gleans with light
blindingly white to the eyes
bright, late summer day

fake trees in baskets
bases filled with some strange moss
dusty, faux, green leaves

dark green tinged with blue
depths of forest canopy
distant and hazy

noisy fan above
does little to relieve the
sticky heat of noon

bright green foliage
set against terra cotta
of grocery store wall

8/31/04

flanked by dead bushes
the stone trail meanders off
into the courtyard

alone in this room
the air conditioner hums
marring the silence

a single trimmed shrub
stands surrounded by chaos:
informal garden

surmounting chain link
flowers spill over barbed wire
and trail down the fence

returned to college
only to find the oak tree
a mound of wood chips
